The ABMS Portfolio Program™ works with health care organizations to connect their quality improvement goals with those of continuing certification through helping physicians earn ABMS Member Board continuing certification credit for things they do in their daily work to advance patient care.
ABMS Portfolio Program Sponsors include a variety of organizations nationwide that are committed to making and sustaining quality and safety improvements. Through regular calls, webinars, and conferences they also share and seek advice from colleagues immersed in quality and safety improvement.
MOCAM supports Portfolio Program Sponsor and physician participation, offering an environment where Portfolio Program staff and ABMS Member Boards can evaluate, offer feedback, and award continuing certification credit/points to physicians for their involvement in a particular initiative.
Sean Powell, MD, Director of Medical Education for the Kaiser Permanente Federation, explains how Portfolio Program initiatives have grown more robust over the years. To date, there are more than 130 ongoing quality improvement initiatives and 5,000+ physicians have completed projects for Maintenance of Certification credit. Dr. Powell says physicians describe their engagement in Portfolio Program initiatives as “empowering and invigorating.”
Paul Foreman, MS, MA, PhD, Project Director for the Asthma Ready® Communities Outcomes & Policy at the University of Missouri Health Care and MU Women’s & Children’s Hospital, describes winning the ABMS Portfolio Program Outstanding Achievement in Quality Improvement Award as “a magnificent achievement” for the providers and their patients and families. Dr. Foreman notes that the initiative can be scaled for efforts to treat asthma in children across the country.
ABMS Portfolio Program™ Sponsors discuss how the program increases physician engagement in quality improvement (QI) work and enables the institutions to reward physicians for their efforts to improve patient care that they are already doing. Sponsors say that the Portfolio Program provides a structure for QI and facilitates publication in QI journals and presentations at QI meetings. Projects have resulted in improving workflow efficiency and immunization rates to preventing patient deaths through early disease detection.
